RSCL: WIN OVER XTREME MOVES THUNDER INTO EAST LEAD July 15, 2007 [Rugby Canada] Hamilton, ON
Saturday at Mohawk Sports Park in Hamilton, was not a pleasant day for rugby fans nor players, particularly the visitors, the Toronto Xtreme.
Despite constant rain that was torrential at times, the Niagara Thunder moved into first place in the Rugby Canada Super League (RCSL) east division with a 27-0 victory.
Playing with a very strong wind in their faces in the first half, the Thunder did well to keep most of the play on inside the Toronto half. The hosts were rewarded with a penalty from fly-half Steve Piatek after 15 minutes, to take a 3-0 lead.
Fifteen minutes later, a Toronto kick was fielded deep in Niagara territory. Thunder fullback Jon Goldie countered, off-loading to Shawn Windsor and the centre eluded several defenders, taking the ball inside the Toronto 22. From there, Piatek slotted over a drop goal to make it 6-0.
Play was back and forth a for the next ten minutes. The Thunder were once again able to move the Xtreme back into their own 22, where number eight Dave Knowles went over for a try. Piatek converted to end the half, with Thunder in the lead 13-0, despite the strong wing.
The Toronto Xtreme seemed to have a bit more possession early in the second half but several running attacks were hampered by the poor conditions, although the wind did ease somewhat.
The next score came after several driving mauls by the Thunder. Moving the ball wide, a pass back inside found hooker Harry Cheung, who had little opposition as he ran under the posts. Piatek’s conversion took the lead to 20-0.
A long period then ensued with both sides battling with the conditions, now also colder as well as wet and windy.
Near the end of the game, Knowles picked up from back of scrum, popped to scrum-half Adam Schouten, who kicked to the corner flag. Thunder pressure yielded a penalty against Toronto; the Thunder chose the line-out
From there, Cheung scored his second try with Piatek getting his third conversion, for a personal total of 12-points on the day. The final score was 27-0 for Thunder, which puts them in first place in the east, but no bonus point was earned.
Prior to the RCSL match, the Toronto Renegades defeated the Lightning (the under-20 development squads) 36-10.

| Strong second half sees Xtreme away over Caribou |
The Toronto Xtreme beat the visiting Quebec Caribou 32-15, and the Newfoundland Rock kept the Irish Canadians from scoring a try in a preseason contest while winning 34-6.
It is the opening weekend of the Rugby Canada Super League, and the dandy double header day at Fletcher's Fields saw an even contest between the Quebec squad and the Xtreme, with a 10-10 score at half time.
Quebec scored twice in the first half with tries from Chris Cesari and Scott Gill while the two Xtreme wings Andile Fushai and Simba Sithole scorched down the touchline for a pair of scores to make the score 10-10 at the break.
There was a twenty minute delay at the start of this match. Because of a jersey clash that went undetected by the manufacturer, both sides trotted out from their respective dressing rooms wearing identical kit. A quick plan to retrieve the Aurora Barbarians kit was hatched, but in the end, Morgan Rawson, owner of Canada Rugby Shop, who was onsite selling kit, provided 22 XXL England jerseys. Needless to say it made things a challenge to identify players during the online broadcast, but it was a novel solution to say the least.
Cesari got his second try of the game in the second half to put his team ahead 15-10, but scores from Matt McLeod, Fushai's second and then a final under the posts from Marco DiGirolamo (pictured - with ball getting tackled) sealed the deal.

RCSL: UNDER-20 COMPETITION TO BE ADDED IN 2007
March 13, 2007 | RugbyCanada.ca
The Rugby Canada High Performance Committee has unanimously recommended urgent organization of a national under-20 championship and has approved the proposal for an under-20 Rugby Canada Super League (RCSL) national competition in 2007.
The format will involve identification of regional RCSL winners from British Columbia, the Prairies, central and Atlantic Canada. On August 4th, the eastern final will be played between the winners from Atlantic Canada and central Canada, as will the western final between the BC and Prairie champions. The national final will be played on Aug 18th.
Each team will pay a registration fee of $5000 and this money will be used to pay for costs of the semi-finals and final.
"The absence of a national championship at this critical age group is a concern, as the national competition pathway from under-16 to senior is deficient without an under-20 championship," commented Rugby Canada Director of Rugby, Geraint John.
"We have started Rugby Canada High Performance Centres in BC, Ontario and Atlantic Canada, with one to start in the Prairies in 2008. One of the major objectives is to develop age-grade players capable of playing for Canada at age-group and senior world championships.
"We view a national under-20 competition as integral to the development of High Performance programs across the country, because a national domestic competition is necessary to provide good games for this age group, to identify players and coaches across the country and to keep good athletes in the game,” added John.
The age-grade structure for Canada will be reviewed when the IRB decide on age-grades fror the various world championships.
LANCASHIRE CELEBRATING 125 YEARS WITH CANADA TOUR
February 28, 2007 | CanadianRugbyNews.com
COUNTY champions Lancashire, who won last season’s final with a splendid comeback against holders and favourites Devon, celebrate their 125th anniversary this season.
Lancashire have won the title 18 times, more than any of their rivals, they intend to celebrate with a tour of Newfoundland and Ontario in mid-June.
“I know RU has changed a lot in recent years becoming professional, but in Lancashire at least we still have a real feel for the traditional side of the game,” chairman Maurice Parker said.
“Most players are only too happy to finish their club campaigns and join us for a small financial reward, so we really do intend to celebrate our long history this time round.
“Last year’s final was memorable, when we came from behind to score some wonderful tries against our old rivals and I’m sure all those players, plus one or two more, will be delighted to join us again.”
Lanashire's tour will include matches against Rugby Canada Super League side's the Newfoundland Rock (current Canadian champs), the Niagara Thunder and the Toronto Xtreme.
